Historic Documents File 1826-1987, (bulk 1830-1890).

The Documents File consists of miscellaneous unpublished records of original and photoduplicated materials related to Monterey and early California. The collection is divided into six series. Series I: a selection of land deeds, title abstracts, and land patents. Series II: letters. Series III includes probate, baptismal and marriage records. Series IV includes Monterey and early California ordinances, petitions and proclamations. Series V consists of selected descriptive articles and records not filed in the Clipping File. It also contains a photocopy of the Monterey County Jail ledger, 1850-1858. Folders are arranged chronologically and numerically.

Sherman was born in 1820 in Lancaster, Ohio, near the banks of the Hocking River. His father, Charles Robert Sherman, a successful lawyer who sat on the Ohio Supreme Court, died unexpectedly in 1829. David Jacks, born in Scotland in 1822, came to the United States in 1841. He arrived in San Francisco, California in April 1849 and became a U.S. citizen that December. In 1851 he moved to Monterey, California and began a lifelong career in property acquisition and management.
